Iconic Date Nut Bread in a Can
The iconic New York City luncheonette staple recreated from scratch and baked in a can! Cream cheese on standby.

This vintage date nut bread was once a deli staple... baked in a can, sliced into perfect rounds, and often served with cream cheese. If you remember the old New York lunch counter world of Chock full o’Nuts, or the deli in the back of the A&P grocery store, this kind of loaf will look familiar. In this video, I build my own recipe, from scratch, for a date nut bread inspired by that old deli style... including the unusual can baking method and the nostalgic pairing of date nut bread with cream cheese. This is not a copied vintage formula. It’s my own reconstruction of a lost loaf... built from memory, research, and a lot of testing to capture the texture, shape, and spirit of the original. Who knows, maybe it’s even better. It might even be the best quick bread you have ever eaten! I also included my recipe for the classic “Nutted Sandwich” cream cheese filling.
