Kentucky Transparent Pie

The pie that shows up with nothing — and still steals the spotlight.

Some pies get all the spotlight. This one has always let its flavor do the talking. It’s called Transparent Pie — a custard-style dessert made with pantry ingredients, a crackly caramelized sugar top, and a rich, buttery filling that tastes more complex than it should. It’s been a regional favorite in parts of Kentucky since the 1930s, and the version I’m baking today is inspired by the one served in Maysville — where locals have been loving the recipe for generations.
