Perfect with a cup of tea or a hot mug of coffee, this almond crusted cake has a velvety tight crumb infused with hints of orange and cardamom.

This buttery velvety crumbed loaf is tender, rich, and fragrant with warm cardamom, finished with a crackly sugar top and slivered almonds for a little extra crunch. I’ve been looking for a simple afternoon tea cake recipe that feels a bit more special than the usual loaf, but I couldn’t find one I loved, so I decided to create a recipe that ticked all of the boxes. The cardamom is the secret ingredient here… warm, floral, and just strange enough to feel like it hitched a ride from somewhere off the Galactic sector map. Add a little vanilla, orange zest, and yogurt for softness, and you get a cake that absolutely NEEDS to sit beside a hot cup of tea.
